Planning a trip through Queensland?
Are you a backpacker on your first trip to Australia?
Find out just how easy it is to explore our magnificent state and country!
We continue our tour of the Queensland east coast, and make our way to the magnificent Whitsunday region encompassing the towns of Bowen, Proserpine, Cannonvale and Airlie Beach to name a few. At all times of the year this region is buzzing with backpackers as they make their way along the coast of Queensland. The first of the towns you’ll come across is Bowen. Tucked in off the Bruce Highway, Bowen is a major mango growing centre, famous for the Bowen Mango, and the Big Mango tourist destination. The Big Mango made international news in 2014 after a media stunt led locals to believe the 10 metre high mango had been stolen, which later was revealed to be a media bonanza for fast food chain Nando’s. Bowen is a picturesque seaside town with much to see and do. While in Bowen be sure to visit the Big Mango, Muller’s Lagoon, Bowen Museum, Bowen Murals and even take to water for snorkelling, diving or even fishing. visit Tourism Bowen to find out more!
Just south of Bowen is beautiful Airlie Beach, a bustling backpacker hotspot year round, and a meeting spot for a lot of international travellers. Airlie beach is home to the Whitsunday Islands and an abundance of activities for young or old. The variety of fantastic activities can be explored at Tourism Whitsundays or search for deals at Viator.com. Backpacker accommodation options can be sought after by visiting Hostelworld.
Many companies offer sailing tours of the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Cruise Whitsundays is an award winning cruise operator which offer an array of day cruise experiences for those on a tighter budget. If you are keep to splash out, however, whilst in this tropical paradise, I recommend Australian Tall Ship Cruises. Take a magnificent cruise aboard a heritage tall ship, prices start from $429 AUD twin share for a 3 day cruise.
This is a one stop shop for a fantastic backpacker stop or family holiday for year round fun. You will need to come back to explore again, one trip won’t be enough!
