Usually I prefer not to use organised tours when exploring new place, however while I was on my very first trip to Bangkok I decided I wanted to try a day trip with Destination Asia. Flight Centre was helpful booking this before I left. They have a lot of different day trip options, but I opted for the Floating Markets and Loy Nava river cruise.
Floating Market Day Trip
The Destination Asia tour guide picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned mini bus. There was about 10 people on the tour, and we had one great personal tour guide for the trip.
I was picked up early Saturday morning and we headed out of Bangkok. There was a lot to see on the drive, and while we drove to the first stop our tour guide gave us some great advice – only use the metered taxis (ask them to use the meter if they try to negotiate) and do not ride on a taxi motorbike because they are unsafe.
Our first stop was a private coconut farm where we learned the process of making coconut sugar. There was a gift shop here as well which sells products made from their coconuts.
Must try: Peanut Brittle
After leaving the coconut farm we went on to Damneon Saduak Floating Markets – the biggest floating markets in Thailand. They were amazing. There was a great choice of food, cafes, souvenir and trinket stalls which lined the canals, as well as hundreds more floating through the canals. We took a longboat down the canals back to a depot. On the way we saw many temples, houses and other attractions, including The Maikaew Damnoen Resort, which was just off one of the canals and looked quite amazing.
Must try: Deep-fried banana
The Loy Nava Dinner Cruise leaves from the Si Phraya Pier at 7pm. You are chauffeured from your hotel to the pier beforehand. The cruise includes dinner on a traditional rice barge whilst floating down the Chao Phraya River. It is meant for two people, however I went solo and it just meant all the more food for me! The host was fabulous. He was super entertaining and spoke many languages. He constantly checked on everyone to make sure we were having a great time. The cruise highlights some of the riverside attractions throughout Bangkok, including the famous Temple of the Dawn. Before the night wrapped up we were privy to traditional dancers on the way back to the pier.
