Planning a trip through Queensland?
Are you a backpacker on your first trip to Australia?
Find out just how easy it is to explore our magnificent state and country!
300 kms south of Cairns is our next stop on this backpacking adventure through Queensland, beautiful Townsville and nearby Magnetic Island. Townsville is home to one of Australia’s largest military bases, Lavarack Barracks and the city prides itself of this honour. Many military families flock to Townsville as servicemen and women carry out their duties while posted there. Industry is also a big part of Townsville with the local refineries employing many Townsville locals. “The Strand” is a common tourist hotspot with magnificent scenery and views of Magnetic Island.
An earlier post titled Visit Townsville, Queensland highlights many attractions and places to stay while in Townsville.
A short ferry ride lands you on beautiful Magnetic Island, well-known as a backpacker hotspot. Maggie is a tranquil tropical island with an abundance of beaches, coves and walking trails to explore. The many sandy beaches give the island its beauty and make for a fantastic day by the ocean.
Maggie attracts thousands of backpackers every year to the pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. Affordable accommodation options for backpackers exist on the island including Base Backpackers, well-known for the monthly full moon party (fullmoondu.com). For a more family friendly or luxurious stay check out the islands’ premier resort Peppers Blue on Blue. More information on accommodation can be found on the Magnetic Island website.
Getting around the island is as enjoyable as the visit itself. There are several options available which include bike riding, and hire scooters and cars. The most famous Magnetic Island transport is the mini moke. Cheap deals exist to hire a mini moke to explore the island and information can be found at miwheels.com.
